It's a BOY!

Wednesday we had the "big" sonogram. The nurse took a look first and said she thought it was a boy. As she looked some more, she thought maybe a girl. Then Dr. Seeker came in and his first comment was ??????, then he thought it was a boy, and then definitely a boy. He said that he was 100% sure but after all that flip-flopping, I was a little wary until I got out the still pictures. I have no doubt that we're having a boy after looking at that!

It took a little while to get over the initial shock because I really thought we were having a little girl. Okay, I really wanted to be able to use all those adorable clothes again. I cried a little when we got in bed that night. I just wanted Coralee to have a sister. The shock is wearing off and I'm getting excited. Shopping has definitely helped that!

While I can definitely see that it's fun to not know what you're having until the baby is born, I think for me it's essential. I guess you can't possibly be upset when you see your child and it isn't who you thought it would be. Still, I think I needed to know so I could deal with the different expectations. Plus, it's neat to think about who he will be. I feel like I know him better already. As if the constant battery on my bladder didn't do a little bit of that. :-)

I think we've pretty much decided on a name. For some reason, we've always had a hard time with boy names. And, as Ken told Coralee on the way to this appointment she really has the "A" name. We just felt like that was such a great name. It seems like boy names have been "taken" over the years as well. We've decided on Lincoln Edward. Lincoln was my great grandfather's name (on my maternal grandmother's side) and Edward was my Daddy's name. I just couldn't name a little boy "Edward"; it's too big of a name for a little boy.

Some people name their kiddos based on the meaning but for me, I love the heritage that comes with a family name. I loved hearing stories about Lincoln Witten. During elementary school, my Aunt Mary compiled several books of letters from family members from back in the 1800s. One of the stories I enjoyed was about Lincoln during the Civil War. He felt strongly about not taking arms against his country while his brothers went to fight for the Confederacy. He walked to Missouri to join the Union army and acted like he was crazy and looking for his mule whenever he encountered other travellers. In a way, that's funny but what I admire about that story was his commitment to what he believed. In the end, he was the only brother who survived the Civil War.

Okay, that's enough serious stuff. Hopefully we'll eventually scan the u/s pictures and let everyone see our little one's private parts. :-)
